The five major elements are an important part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). We can learn a lot by watching nature: Wood (Wind), Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. The wood and wind elements are especially interesting! In Chinese medicine, when we talk about these elements, we mean movement. Think of the roots of a tree or the vines on a branch. They move and grow steadily and smoothly, almost without being noticed! When we crack open our windows or step outside for a morning walk, we see the vines coming to life this spring. Life is beautiful! As the seasons change, we welcome the wind to bring in that change. Sometimes the wind can be very strong and force big changes on the earth. The cold air moves along as winter says goodbye, and the warmth of spring leaves its familiar ground to travel to a new home for a while. These things around us affect our bodies. The more attention we pay to taking good care of our bodies, the better they will do through the times of change.
There are two things we do to care for our bodies. We nourish the body with food (yin) and we move the body with breath (yang). (Yin is the calm, nourishing side of energy, and yang is the active, moving side.) A woman came in for acupuncture to help with hand tremors and migraine headaches. Her body was out of harmony because of a life full of very stressful events. Acupuncture treatment at Renaissance Health Centre helped greatly to reduce her painful headaches and body tremors.
